When not at her day job in infrastructure administration with the City of Kelowna, Capt Irene Wangler is Commanding Officer of the 1705 BC Dragoons, Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps.  Cadets aged 12 to 18 progress through a series of courses in leadership, citizenship, outdoor activities, survival skills, map & compass, etc., & have access to a variety of expeditions, exchanges & competitions.  Most of the program is free, though there is some fund-raising.  Year-round cadet training prepares some participants for summer camps, such as the ones held here in Vernon.  Some army, sea & air cadets progress to the regular forces, but most are simply enjoying a wide selection of inexpensive activities, combined with invaluable skill development.  (Photo by Keith Johnston)
