Kevin Poole, Vernon's Manager of Economic Development & Tourism, is thanked by President-Elect Janet Green.  Kevin explained there are roughly 25,000 economic development officers throughout North America, competing to attract new business & industry.  In the U.S., many incentives such as reduced-price or free land, relaxed labour laws, low interest loans, grants & tax relief are used to entice investors.  In Canada, most of these incentives aren't permitted, so we rely on attracting new investment through promotion of our "lifestyle," or other characteristics.  About 80% of our economic growth comes from within our community.  Kevin hopes to hire an economic development planner, to expedite approvals through the planning process.  He briefly touched on potential impacts of recently announced direct flights between Kelowna & Fort McMurray.
